Oil is down ATM, as far as I can make out, because of an unseasonally warm snap in the northern hemisphere winter. Temperatures in new york are 12 degrees above average. My daughter, a south east Queensland girl born and breed, is on holidays in Canada. She emailed me the other day and is most put out because she has never seen snow and the winter there ATM is no colder than what we get in Brisbane. SO, low demand for heating oil.

That weather is forecast to last until the end of this week coming. A cold snap would quickly reverse the fortunes of oil and hence gold.

also the historical chart indicates that it is traditional to have a dip in gold early Jan and a spike in late Jan. I tip this as a buying op to trade gold shares. Buy now sell late Jan.
