I suspect that technology, automation, robotics etc will only succeed in US manufacturing in limited sectors where overall demand is low - some specialised products. The Chinese have access to the same technology and will always produce at lower cost than the US.
Yes you are right, that is already happening in US manufacturing.
It just won't be enough to be competitive with China. Protectionist policies will be used.
