A similar debate appears to be unfolding in the US, where the descendants of the indigenous inhabitants find no joy in celebrating such national holidays as Independence Day and Thanksgiving.

And, like Australia's Aborigines, why should they?

The eurotrash, ie British in Australia, wrote the history of European settlement in both countries, and they were verily I tell you the greatest thing ever before and after sliced bread.

This was of course rubbish, with the building of both nations marked by genocide of the locals, dispossession of land, arrogance, lies and complete and utter dis-disrespect.

The history of both nations can be written any number of ways and this a legitimate view. In Australia, any form of native land title wasn't recognized until 1994, and then mostly symbolic.

The British, er sorry English have perpetrated the myth that they were the best colonial masters Earth has seen. It's a lie. Pretty much everywhere they went they brought genocide, massive theft and repatriation of assets and racism, in return for some railways and a few nice buildings. Australia was no exception.

I welcome the fact that Australia is now mature enough to face the truth of its past, and that some people have a different take on our history to the orthodox conservative tripe. And that it is also fair to say that Australia Day is Invasion Day.

Oh, while I'm at it: ditch the queen, become an independent republic; tax religions; recast ANZUS.
