There are definitely benefits you can have with a mobile based product, some of which you already mentioned. How much use it is to send photos of crops? I'm not sure.. But transmitting quality images (~5-10MB) over a 1-6Mbps wireless link at a large distance would end up with lots of re-transmits taking time and possibly corrupt data. People don't have much time for products that don't work first time every time. They'd just take a photo and wait till they are back up at the property to review.

But picking up on your point about outdoor AP's and the ones you have used for low-cost and ease of replacement. That there is the problem. Farmers don't want products that you have to worry about stuffing up and then having to get replaced which could take days or weeks depending on location/warranty/stock levels etc.
Wireless has lots of problems and you need to pay dearly for the most robust equipment and even then you aren't guaranteed anything.

How many times do you need to reboot anything related to two-way radios vs how many times you need to reboot anything related to wireless AP's.

I believe it's ease of use and robustness is what most farmers would look for. Fiddling around with your mobile getting "can't connect to server" errors, then having to reboot it to see if it can connect, then working out it's the AP that's the issue and will need replacing isn't a pretty picture.

Just think about how many problems you have with your mobile phone on a day-to-day basis connecting to work wifi, home wifi, bluetooth in your car, app's not responding, touch screen playing up, battery drain, not charging, this list goes on.... These are all issues that two-way radios don't have. Sacrificing that type of reliability of communications just for a couple of extra's such as photos/texting would be a hard sale I think.

But you are right, there are a lot of rural properties that this type of product might be suited to. But how much are those properties willing to pay for this type of solution?
