Remember what France did to American beef during the mad cow disease outbreak, and what America did to French red wine in retaliation? This was a long time ago but if you Google it you might find some interesting reads.
The point is, ANY trade relationship is fraught with inherent risks of changes on both ends of the relationship. Even with countries that I suspect you would classify as more "honest", based on the undertone of your post. I think you know what I mean.
It's a fact of life, shit happens, deal with it and move on. Hell if everyone was so fearful of trading like you are, the whole world would've ground to a halt!
