re: margin Re Comsec (CommSec) Margin Loan.

I believe the minimum loan for the Margin Loan account is actually $20,000. (Not $40,000 as previously suggested).

So if Anvil was acceptable security - 40% LVR - then one would need $30,000 worth of Anvil shares.
Comsec would allow further purchase of Anvil shares on a margin lending basis to value of $20,000.
$30,000 purchases $50,000 worth of Anvil.
Note the $20,000 borrowed is 40% of the total holding.

May work better for some on a limited budget to take on a "blue chip" which has a 70% LVR.
In this case one could purchase (say) National Bank with an investment of about $8,570 which would enable one to borrow the additional $20,000 to bring a total holding in NAB of about $28,570.
Note that the $20,000 borrowed is about 70% of the total which includes original contribution and loan purchase.

Naturally it would be very risky indeed to borrow close to the LVR.
In such a case should the share price slump a Margin Call is placed on the borrower who must provide further funds to support the loan and/or sell shares at the depressed price. (Not good)
Funds usually required within 24 hours.
Failure to provide funds will trigger automatic selling of portfolio by the lender. (could be very nasty)
