Nickel next?
Nickel has got a long way to go before anyone gets too excited. But if Glasenberg is right, it might be time to take a fresh look at the ASX-listed players. Glasenberg’s reason for optimism on the nickel price is the same as that outlined here last week by Robert Friedland, the billionaire mining financier who has the hots for the Clean Teq (CLQ) Syerston nickel-cobalt-scandium project in NSW.
It’s all about the growth coming in electric vehicles, or more specifically the likely demand growth for the metals found in lithium-ion batteries.
Glencore is a big nickel miner in its own right and has plans to get bigger still. According to Glasenberg the EV market currently consumes about 100,000 tonnes of nickel, significant in itself given the global annual market is for about 2 million tonnes of the metal.
But EVs are really only just getting started. BHP Billiton, also a nickel producer, reckons there could be 25 per cent per annum growth in the number of EVs to 2035 when EVs could account for 13 per cent of the global fleet compared with less than 1 per cent currently.
“Imagine if 10 per cent of the world’s car fleet moves to EVs, that would account for about 400,000 tonnes of nickel,’’ Glasenberg said. “So we see a shortage.’’
Ever the most price-volatile of the metals, nickel could well be embarking on a new era, the likes of which have not been seen before, thanks to the disruptive power of EVs.
Finally, remember last week Friedland said the rise of EVs was about air pollution in the world’s megacities rather than the more abstract concept of global warming? Well on Friday Athens, Madrid, Mexico and Paris undertook to rid themselves of diesel cars in particular by 2025. They won’t be the last.

the key point of difference between CLQ and the rest is that it can process the Nickel and Cobalt in a form that is required by the LiB industry and without outsourcing it i.e. it's done 'in house'.

I think the broader, international market is slowly catching on that the
Syerston Project is one of the largest and highest grade scandium deposits in the world and one of the highest grade and largest nickel and cobalt deposits outside of Africa.
