Windfall in response to your post what would you do in the following situation:

You are the MD of a company that only has one product and you have found out it probably doesn't work - do you:
1. Put the company into administration. Have all your options and shares become worthless. Lose Job.
2. Buy yourself time by doing phase 2b trial, and try and diversify the company so when it is shown that the drug doesn't work at least you can say "but we have all these other promising drugs" and you get to keep your company and job.
