That's still very low for a coal at such depth but I think it's a result of the low rank and high temperature. High temperatures give a lower sorption capacity (because of the molecules have more energy so they don't stick to the coal as well) and low rank generally means the coal has lower internal surface area which means not as much area for the molecules to stick to.

I don't buy the "explosive release of gas" thing - in fact, if that did happen it should actually overestimate the gas, not underestimate it. These guys come up with some crazy ideas sometimes! Oh well, not important.

Regarding the "explosive gas thing"........is that because the core sample would be held within a sealed canister and thus any supposed "explosive gas" would be extra not less counted gas in the canister?.....gas that would otherwise be held within the coal core itself?
