The latest polls run by Essential are an eye opener as to where the
Turnbull govt is seen as going wrong.
The poll indicates that the govt is seen by voters as having become
more conservative and the net effect of that is clear negative with the current
poll on voting intent giving Labor a comfortable lead of 53% to the
govt’s 47%. This has been the trend for some time now.
Those polled was specifically asked whether they believe the Liberals had
gone more conservative compared to 2015 and 37% believed it has gone more
conservative compared to 24% in 2015.
Also of note is the fact that that the percentage of voters asked about whether
the Liberals had gone more progressive this figure went in the opposite direction
with only 14% saying that is the case in 2016 compared to a whopping 27% in 2015
So the Liberals are seen as having gone far more conservative and far less
progressive in 2016 and the net effect of that has been a consistent decline
in there vote percentage. There primary vote less than Labor and even with
the Nationals added to the Liberal vote it is only equal to Labor’s primary vote.
After Greens and other preferences Labor leads 53/47. Of note also is that while
Malcolm Turnbull still leads as preferred PM his approval rating is point behind
Bill Shorten and his disapproval rating is greater than Bill Shortens.
This poll basically confirms what I have been posting for a while now
and that is there is a perception that Malcolm Turnbull and his govt are being
held hostage by the conservative right of the LNP and the voters don't like it.
They want the govt to go the other way, that is, Liberal progressives with
Malcolm Turnbull taking the lead rather than caving in to the dissidents
on his own side. That is what many expected of Malcolm Turnbull but so far
not seen since the election. There is still time to change but cannot be delayed
any longer imo.
