The average graduate lasts less than 5 years in the job. I retired after 39 years........the rot had already set in. I would not advise young people to become teachers unless there were some drastic changes implemented. Discipline must be restored.....kids who don't listen, don't learn......it's a simple but effective message. Resources are also crucial....more funding is needed. I worked as a builder's labourer (on leave) .......teacher pay is appalling in comparison. The hourly rate of a labourer doesn't sound great but once all the allowances are factored in.....wow, these were the biggest pay cheques that I've ever seen !!! They don't have a hex debt or the stress that teachers have to deal with every day of their working lives ! I could go on but my guess is that they'll bring in teachers from other countries to fill any shortfall. They'll lure them with free airfares, offers of citizenship & most likely generous tax concessions (a la 457 visa style.) This is similar to what occurred in the 1970s.
