I think what clark means is that trading is a zero sum game.
In a futures market, the end result is 0, what someone loses its what someone else gains.
Equity markets are not a zero sum game as more money is added to the system via dividends etc.
However the paradox is that everything in the end, when taking into account inflation is a zero sum game.
