The last part of your post would bother me. Without going into great details, IMO, to even consider aligning yourself with the Pope or his shocking statements/ideas would put you on dangerous grounds.
One of his missions or rolls is to unite all faiths and even non faiths under one banner, hence the shocking statements he makes trying to appease/adapt to many, including non faiths/science etc.
And to top it off he says, if one thinks they can come to God outside his church or a church, you are in the land of fairies.
When people or a faith come out with just some of what he says, get the hec out of Dodge (right away from them and their ideas).
