Yes, if we were to became a republic it would not change much. The indirect model that Howard put up would be much the same as now where politician appoint the GG but instead the GG would be president and not be the representative of the Queen.
A directly elected model I imagine would have candidates nominated for the position, the candidates would ideally be non political types much like the GG's we have had
