If I look at my portfolio, all of the stocks that I currently have money on, have a controlling major shareholder in the form of founders, family, management with substantial stake, active investment company (as opposed to passive institutional shareholders).

Of the 9 stocks in my portfolio, 5 companies have positive net cash balance. 1 company is well on the way back to positive net cash. 2 companies have debt.

7 companies don't use options/rights, 2 companies use minimal amounts.

Share investing as it is, is risky enough, I don't need to add an extra layer of risks by using debts, options, shorts, CFDs, margin lending or investing in companies with complicated balance sheet.

I know there are others who are good at identifying asset plays, turnarounds, etc. I'm fully aware that I'm not one of them, therefore I need to stay within my circle of competence.
