M2 FIRST TO GO LIVE WITH OPTUS 3G SERVICES
February 9 2007. Diversified telecommunications services provider M2 Telecommunications Group Limited
(ASX: MTU) has this week launched its Third Generation (“3G”) mobile network service offering using the
Optus 3G mobile network, making M2 the first Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) to go live with Optus
3G services.
The Optus 3G service offering will include all of the voice and content services available on the existing
Optus 2.5G network, together with the addition of video calling and mobile broadband, known as Optus
Wireless Connect (OWC).
The OWC mobile broadband service provides customers with the ability to gain access to the Internet
wherever there is Optus 2G, 2.5G, 3G or WiFi coverage within Australia and with Optus partner mobile
networks around the world, via the Bridge Mobile Alliance.
M2 plans to make the Optus 3G services available to both their retail and wholesale customers. M2’s
Managing Director and CEO, Vaughan Bowen said; “We are very pleased to be the first to hit the ground with
Optus 3G services. Both our M2 Telecom retail customers as our M2 Wholesale customers have expressed
strong interest in the 3G offering”.
It is within its M2 Wholesale subsidiary (formerly Wholesale Telecommunications Services) which M2
expects to see its Optus 3G service gain the most traction. Bowen said: “As our base of wholesale
customers continues to expand, we expect the Optus Wireless Connect service to become a highly
demanded product amongst our existing and potential wholesale customers, in particular medium and large
scale Internet Service Providers (ISP’s) which possess existing broadband know-how and sizable customer
bases”
