Why else build military outposts in such a region if not to influence shipping within that region. There is an argument that it is to protect themselves from US invasion, however considering the trade links which exist with China, and the proximity to the Chinese mainland - particularly the recognition that the best route for the US is via the East China Sea which is straddled by both Taiwan and Japan, who are they protecting themselves from, Brunei?

They are physically claiming control, they are showing their neighbors and the USA this is ours hands off, and the USA dont like it prolly for a variety of reasons.
