On the other hand detecting gas seepage and then drilling is the original method of oil and gas exploration and many major fields have been discovered that way all around the world. It's true that the gas may be uncontained so seeps away and drilling is a waste of time but deposits of natural gas close to the surface are often dwarfed by nearby oil deposits. So the gas is escaping but not the oil. We know this is an oil prospective area because Central already located oil in the area ie the Surprise Oil Field L6. Looks to me like the escaping gas is within that field.
