brisen, I have a son working for IP Australia in Canberra (EL1 level) but I don't ask him questions about what he thinks because he would be in an awkward position regarding confidentiality. He did say that applying for a patent is free but that it was very common for mining companies (in particular) to get their free patents but then spend a fortune defending their rights.
