'Why not extend it to the Scriptures healthy advice to "make sure of all things". - 1 Thess 5:21.''

That is good advice. To 'make sure of all things' means to question all things, including to question what the bible tells us is true.
The way to 'make sure of all things' must surely be to examine evidence for all claims, including claims made in the bible?

    Don't you agree?
    ----------
Absolutely I agree! This was in fact the very point Paul was making to the congregation in Thessalonica. Paul visited the city and began preaching in the synagogue of the Jews using references in their scrolls that had foretold the death of the Messiah along with his resurrection. This resulted in some becoming believers so that Paul was able to establish a congregation there. Acts 17:1-4.
Paul must have been chuffed that these accepted what they had been taught as "the word of God". - 1 Thess 2:13 . It was in this context that Paul urged them to "make sure of all things".- 1 Thess 5:21. Notice also that Paul spoke of ones in Beroea as being "more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica."
Why was that? Paul went on to explain "they accepted the word with the greatest eagerness of mind, carefully examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so". Acts 17:11.
A gullible attitude to what we hear is of no lasting value. Genuine faith in the Scriptures can only be acquired and maintained with a similar careful examination regularly.
