Insurance companies are happy to insure your house against things that are unlikely to happen but this is useless to most people. We live in the country on a river surrounded by lush dairy farms & the insurance we really need is flood insurance but no company will touch it, yet they are happy to cover bushfires (or stampeding kangaroos) even though there is no bush for miles. We had a flood in 2009 & since then everybody in our postcode has had big insurance hikes, even houses built up on hills that were never going to flood. This was a blatant opportunistic rip off because Insurance coys. were never going to cover them against flood anyway, so they were never going to pay out. It's probably the opposite for people who live in the Blue Mountains trying to get cover against bushfires, but i'll bet they have no trouble with flood insurance, bloody useless.
