It looks that way to me as well, even today. There's no rule that says you have to keep shareholders informed but "tracking to budget" then "recapitalisation" is a bit suspicious.
I presume you are talking about at the time of the acquisition, we can only speculate what people were thinking. They wouldn't have bought Quindell if they thought it a lemon surely? May have found out soon after and kept pumping the stock is that where you are interested in getting AG's house?

For my parent's generation housing has been wonderful, driven by insane mass immigration and rising debt levels. The former shows no sign of slowing but there's a limit to the latter.
I can't venture an opinion on it, except people do well with houses in that they buy what they know but it is also prone to the boom and bust cycles of speculation and leverage which act together on the way up and back down.
For a long term holder the cycles seem like less of a worry depending where you are you probably understand it better than I could. For me shares are a lot of fun and far more lucrative than housing could ever be.
In Vancouver Marc Cohodes has been calling it a disaster. Short sellers need a pinch of salt.

I don't know that Vancouver is the same as Aus and New Zealand but we have the same problems of housing affordability relative to incomes.
