Where I live the employment rate is around the 5% mark, but employers can't get lazy people to do any work, they prefer the dole, so they import labour on temporary visas to get the job done, thousands of them every year.
Yeah, I hear about poverty, but they can afford tattoos and booze. My neighbour's had a sign out the front of his house for 6 months advertising for truck drivers, he just can't get them.
The fact is there's always poverty and no-hopers. Perhaps you'd like to prove that more Americans than ever are in poverty and surviving on food stamps. There's more Aussies on welfare as a % than Americans, so your argument doesn't stack up.
