The tower is still very valid as it can provide a base load type power as it still produces power at night unlike other "sun" powered generation and wind power with no wind. No storage is required for operating. Current batteries have a max useful life of around 7-10 years so there is no current battery solution that could reasonably be an equivalent to the tower.
As long as idiot governments continue to talk about throwing billions at "clean" coal then tower development will always struggle. Just need one to be built to show the rest of the work it can work and be cost effective. Unfortunately it seems there is still a lack of willingness to be the first.
