Mining heirs fight over $4bn tenement

MINING heiress Angela Bennett says dying billionaire Lang Hanc..ock may well have had a different understanding from that of her family about who would control a joint $4 billion tenement following his death.

But she says no one warned Mr Hanco..ck about the misunderstanding.

The misunderstanding has become a dispute in the West Australian Supreme Court between the children of mining magnate Peter Wright – Ms Bennett and her brother Michael Wright – and Mr Hanco..ck's only child, Gina Rinehart, Australia's first female billionaire.

Ms Bennett was giving evidence in the court today where she revealed surgery to remove a brain tumour in 2003 had left her with memory loss and comprehension difficulties.

The court dispute centres on Ms Rinehart's claim that her company, Hanco..ck Prospecting, is entitled to a 25 per cent share of the Rhodes Ridge tenement, in the WA Pilbara, which is 50 per cent owned by Rio Tinto.

The Wrights say a deal struck between their father and Mr Hanco..ck in the mid-1980s means that Wright Prospecting is entitled to the entire 50 per cent not owned by Rio Tinto.

Until Mr Hanco..ck's death in March 1992, he controlled any sale of Rhodes Ridge on behalf of the two families.

But Ms Bennett said that after Mr Hanco..ck's death Wright Prospecting gained that control.
