So MTU stands for Maximum Transmission Unit, or how much we can send in each packet. Reducing this would reduce "lag" as each packet can be processed faster due to there being less data, however there would be more total overhead as more packets would be required to send the same amount of data. That is why I assume you are not seeing the usual data savings. You are probably actually in the negative territory tbh.
