Pointer of policy change??
'No new mines' policy has failed, Evans says
Federal Labor's resources spokesman has criticised his own party's uranium policy, saying it does not make sense.
Senator Chris Evans told a petroleum industry conference in Adelaide today he hopes the 'no new mines' policy will be scrapped at Labor's national conference next week.
He says Labor originally had a 'three mines' policy but Australia now has four mines.
"It's totally failed to meet its objectives - we now export more uranium, three times more uranium than we used to when we adopted the policy," he said.
"So purely on the basis of assessment of efficacy we ought to change the policy."
However Senator Evans says Labor will stand by its policy against nuclear power in Australia.
