you' re correct. Scale is the salts depositing onto the metal parts of the pump. They' re most likely using a weak acid to redisolve these salts. The other issue is that the holes in these pumps are so small that small particles of dirt/coal/fracking particles are restricting the flow of these pumps. If left unchecked, they may even block the flow altogether. That is why it is so important to change the pumps over to beam pumps.
On another note, they have less than 100mmb of water to pump out ( maximum amount that is) to have proof of concept. ie less than 100 days. Hence the constant wording in their announcements of 2nd quarter to have proof of concept.
Also, from their previous announcement, they are talking to Orica in order to get them to stump up some funds.
