Directional drilling is common...and is how they drill horizontal wells!

Over 4.5+km, we could virtually be drilling back up towards the rig again given the natural flexibility of the drill string over such a length...lol

With the use of powered drill bits however, many things are possible, including more precise directional drilling, be it vertical or horizontal!


Density images of borehole shapes from the adnVISION Azimuthal Density Neutron tool confirm that a hole drilled with a positive displacement motor (PDM) (top) exhibits much more tortuousity than the smooth borehole drilled with the PowerDrive vorteX system (bottom).
