Concerning worries expressed about maintaining the dividend at 31c pa, Telstra is to receive $1 billion pa (inflation adjusted) for the next 35 years from the Government as part of its NBN compensation package. That works out at a bit more than 8c pa for Telstra's approximate 12 billion shares.
Seems to me that Telstra is awash with money, whereas TPG now faces years of grind to pay back its recent and projected borrowings. I am greatly interested in finding out who TPG had to outbid for the spectrum it bought. Was it Optus, or was it Vodaphone? Either way, they obviously didn't think it was worth it.
