Please read the Definition again: A contractual condition that suspends the coming into effect of a contract UNLESS OR UNTIL A CERTAIN EVENT TAKES PLACE.

The suspension of the effect of the contract is for the duration it is waiting for that certain event to takes place. What happen when it is confirmed that that certain event will NEVER or COULD NOT TAKE place! That is when the effect of the contract is suspended FOREVER, that is both parties are no longer bound or put simply the contract is dead and buried.
