Of course tolerance and acceptance are necessary on the likes of HC.
But evolving language is no longer "evolving" - it is being copied. It's change is accelerated courtesy of social media led drivel and mindless television programs that largely originate from the U.S and then are faithfully copied in their ilk by Australian program writers... "Reality" programs for example. Because "if it comes from the U.S. it must be worthwhile". The U.S. produces incredible stuff; from the most brilliant to the lowest level.
In the space of a generation we have many in first world countries incapable of performing elementary mental arithmetic, can't spell, have no idea about punctuation and can barely articulate an idea in words or in writing.... Why? Once again due to the virus social media popular with the masses and very poor standards and priorities in our education system. It has become abysmal and to not be concerned and irritated by it and voice opinion to this effect, occasionally, is to condone and accept it. I briefly last night did just that.
"Gaol", "tyre" in America are spelt jail and tire. If we spell them that way, it's copying, not evolution. The fact people do it in this country does not make it right. It's a reflection more so of people's learning, or lack thereof. Today almost everyone says everything is "great" ... or "not great". They no longer pause and choose a word which provides a closer, more informative meaning to what they are saying. Language can be beautiful if used with some thought. "Great" is neither informative nor attractive.
I don't share your "freedom of the individual" opinion and to accept it all blindly and silently. It's true it is probably inevitable, due to the way society functions these days, but certain standards are spiralling downhill at an accelerating pace. As communicators with each other, our outlook is increasingly bleak.
May POS fair better ...
