Text.... As Australian prime ministers go, Bob Hawke was as sports-mad as they come — not that he hasn’t had some competition, the incumbent serial spectator included. The Silver Bodgie could be spotted at racetracks and sports grounds across the country, sometimes even as a participant, but the highpoint of his career came in his first year at the helm. The year was 1983, the sport was yachting. The nation watched with bated breath as Australia II finally extricated the America’s Cup from the century-long grasp of the New York Yacht Club. Hawke, clad in garish jacket, barracked along in the studio before virtually declaring an impromptu public holiday with the famous words: "Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum."
