    NRC Proposes Adding Plane Crash Security Assessments to New Reactor Design Certification Requirements
    On April 24, 2007, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission unveiled the third in a series of major steps to enhance the post-Sept. 11 security of nuclear power plants. The agency proposal would require each applicant for a new reactor design to assess how the design, to the extent practicable, can have greater built-in protections to avoid or mitigate the effects of a large commercial aircraft impact, making them even more resistant to an attack.     NRC Issues License for Gas Centrifuge Uranium Enrichment Plant in Ohio
    On Friday, April 13, 2007, NRC issued a license to USEC Inc. to construct and operate a gas centrifuge uranium enrichment plant at the Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant reservation near Piketon, Ohio. The facility, to be known as the American Centrifuge Plant, will use a design based on gas centrifuge technology developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to enrich uranium for use in fuel for commercial nuclear power reactors.     Economic Benefits Report on Grand Gulf Nuclear Station
    NEI and Entergy have published a report on the economic benefits of the Grand Gulf nuclear station in Mississippi. The report calculates the plant's contribution to the local and state economies, as well as to the United States. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission recently granted an early site permit to Entergy to construct an additional reactor unit at the Grand Gulf site. Full story
