OMG, we were in NYC last year, and it took me a while to wake up to why I was getting filthy looks when I asked for "white coffee".
The servers are predominately African American and Hispanic. Finally, one of them straightened me out. The have "coffee without milk" and "coffee with milk". All good after that.
