"Yes I will agree that IF at some time in the future Iraq does become free democratic country that is a model for the rest of the middle east the AQ support base may be weakened. That unfortunately for the Iraqi people though is a big IF and a very long way of if it ever does happen"
thats it miles.you get it.that is the big picture. sure, they may not succeed but they have to try.
i can remember the first time i heard of the idea of bringing democracy to iraq-i was astonished.i listened anyway, the woman being interviewed was from some american thinktank, she kept pleading-"we have to try" it took me a while to fully understand why it was so important but once i understood it, in the context of the war with terror, i got it. i also remember being deeply pessimistic about the future of the world after sep 11.only after a number of speeches by gwb did i feel like our leaders were up to the challenge.
the first speech didn't work on me at all.i thought it was gwb just talking.i really didn't believe he would carry through at that time.
the funny thing is.that original speech was not questioned by anyone.at that time, i think everyone knew we had a lot to do.how things change with time.something obl knows so well.
i remember saying to a left wing friend, that the usa might decide in the future that they have no choice but to nuke the whole middle east.there was no great protest at this idea by my left wing friend.if i said it now, their would be a long rant on the evils of america.
obl has time on his side and he knows it.
his biggest fear is losing support in the middle east.
