Cortis, it would be interesting to know what the level of written language was in those days. I suspect that the level of intelligence was extremely low, given that to this day in the middle east they still stone to death 17 year olds for loving someone outside of their religious group. If the IQ were extremely low then the mind of an individual would have been easily manipulated by a person/s of more intelligence promoting their religious agenda. I believe Jesus was like Socrates, Kant, Krishna, Loa Tse, Confucius, and other great philosophers. They preached a faith that suited their beliefs and that humankind would benefit from, if adopted and followed. Making a statue out of gold and kneeling before it and praying, was the done thing a couple of thousand years ago. Thankfully, some of us have evolved and advanced to the point that we can question the existence of a supreme being without killing those who disagree.
