"Uranium drilling sparks new mine hopes

A drilling program for uranium, about 150 kilometres north of Ceduna in South Australia's west, has led to hopes for a new mine in the region.

Toro Energy is about three-quarters of the way through a 200-hole drilling program in the Gawler Crayton in an area which showed potential for uranium in the 1970s.

The company's managing director, Greg Hall, says while there is still a long way to go, the results are extremely encouraging and the company is keen to push ahead with the project.

"The tenor of the mineralisation is now at a level where it's got the right economics if it holds together," he said.

"It's in an area of known mineralisation and we know that the same formations extend further which are currently 'undrilled', so there is potential to find further mineralisation ... [it is] very encouraging and our initial program now is only the first one of probably two or three that we'll do this year."
