He isn't referring to the charge of the light brigade (British) during the Crimean war, but rather the last cavalry charge ever - which was the highly successful charge of the Australian Light Horse at Beersheba during the First World War, when The Aussies captured the heavily fortified town with a lightning charge across the desert plain armed only with rifles, pistols and bayonets as swords. As "modern" light horse they would normally have been expected to ride to a battle, dismount and fight on foot (hence they were not equipped with sabres). In this battle they charged across the Turkish lines directly into the Turkish artillery and trenches at very high speed, thus surprising the Turks who expected them to do what everyone said they should do, and couldn't range their guns fast enough to stop the charge. The town had held off repeated attacks by much larger British forces for months at staggering cost of British lives, who kept attacking as everyone said they should - on foot. The Aussies took the town within a few hours of arriving on the battle field - partly because they had to due to the fact they had less than a day's water supply on arrival, and no local water resources.
