Caesium formate is absolutely essential for the oil drilling industry. It is legislated for all wells in the North Sea. With the cost to BP of billions of dollars for the blow out on the Deepwater Horizon well, no deep water wells will get insurance unless they use caesium formate as the drilling liquid. There is no other operating mine on the horizon. The previous principal supplier was the Tanco mine owned by Cabot in Canada. This is now closed by order of the Canadian Authorities on safety grounds. The Bitka mine is basically mined out. There is further demand for caesium for its light sensitive properties for things like night vision goggles and light sensitive switches, as well as fireworks. There is a very significant demand and no other apparent supplier, except for existing stocks and relatively minor by product supplies. The company has predicted mining to commence before October. Who am I to disagree?
