A few observations about the glasshouse pot trial.
In south-west Victoria, the optimal flowering time in the field for wheat is around 10th October, when the risks of frost, heat stress and dry conditions are lowest - flowering being the most sensitive stage of wheat to stress and has the largest effect on yield. To achieve this timely flowering, planting of mid-season wheat cultivars (eg. ‘”Bolac” that was used in the pot trial) needs an early April sowing – it takes about 140 days in the field from seeding to flowering. So what !!!
The image of the glasshouse pot trial (Image 1 of GPP ASX market release) shows that the wheat plant treated with OHD has finished flowering 79 days after seeding and has NO more ears (unripe heads) to produce. By contrast, the control plant has a larger biomass than the OHD treated plant and has not yet started to flower fully – the control plant has a much higher potential to produce a higher yield.
CONCLUSION:
The plants in the pot trials were harvested TOO early – if the plants were allowed to grow to maturity (when the actual yield is determined!), then it is likely the untreated wheat plant would have outyielded the OHD treated plant !!!
Until the results of this very limited and small glasshouse pot trail can be reproduced under field conditions, I am very sceptical.
Imagine if a biotech company released an announcement like this with very limited experimentation and data !!!!
