The other aspect of the results of the trial that puzzled me was the proportion of controls that failed to produce any heads at all. I can't imagine farmers accepting seed where 20% of the germinated seeds don't crop.
Here's a study comparing two types of wheat (one of which was Bolac) using N as fertiliser:

Note that the unfertilised crops averaged ~ 2.8 heads per plant, as opposed to the 0.8 in the GPP trial. It'd be interesting to know if Monash had commented on why 79 days was an end point for the trial rather than the full growth cycle, what the results were after the growth cycle was complete (if the trial was run to that stage) and why on average only one in five controls produced a head.
