Abbott was never popular and not long after the 2013 election, his stocks and that of the LNP went down hill fast. Time and Time again polls showed how unpopular Abbott was while at the same time Turnbull was by far the most popular potential leader.
With LNP polling so poorly for 18 months it was obvious LNP where heading over the cliff with Abbott, that was what brought Abbott down, nothing and no one else
