hematit is by far the better ore. it is usually >60%fe while magnetite is usually around the 35-40%fe mark.

the advantage of hematite is that it can be directly shipped to steel mills and used while magnetite has to be processed further once dug up and pelletised before it can be put into the steel mills.

but where iron ore prices are at the moment it has made large scale magnetite projects economically viable plus china is building furnaces that handle magnetite more efficiently.
