You're right, the reaction of the government to this is yet to be known. When it comes to politics and what actions the government might take, it's a very, very grey area - they often come out with surprises, so they're very hard to predict.

But any government would feel threatened if their tax revenue takes a dip. But you're right, net disposable income might be increased even with slightly higher income tax clipping.

I'm just trying to let people know it's not all win if Amazon comes in. Local businesses pay a tonne of taxes. Amazon coming in and decimating small and medium businesses will also be a kick to the guts of a lot of our enterprising community.

I've read that they're bringing in some US suppliers together with them. They're not purely going to be setting up a marketplace and asking local Aussie companies nicely to come on board. They're bringing the big monsters who they work with closely in the US to come in first. The ones who do Amazon basics (their home brands, for nappies, diapers, undergarments) at almost cost price. At the end of the day, Amazon is taking profits from the Australian economy, back to the American economy, and they plan to pay no tax in either jurisdiction.
