Huh? Was that on the ticket? Its a bit of an oxymoron to use the word safely and a fine??

    Was it in VIC???

The key to overtaking safely and not getting a ticket is to do as fast as possible and not emerge from the OT lane over speed, i.e. OT early and then come back to speed limit before the OT lane runs out. Most OT lanes have no or little shoulder so the cops can't sit on them and tend to be sitting at the end where the shoulder increases again. (Having said that be aware of OT lanes with shoulders or that run over hills).

One of the worst OT lanes in just south of Byron Bay (I think), ends about 100 metres over a crest which means that traffic re-merges out of sight of the overtaking traffic and slows.....very dangerous and stupid design......but great for catching people overtaking coming over the crest.

Also if they use radar as opposed to hand held laser and tell you that you were speeding when overtaking, don't accept it as the radar would be picking up all the traffic not just you.
