Just pay the 1 billion for a 1000MW coal plant
The leased diesel generators are to be used as a backup.
Comprising, I think, 9 separate units that can be fired up in stages.
based on last year they might only be used a few times during summer.
Quite an expensive arrangement but being portable they can be commissioned quickly.
A coal station would take years to build and wouldn't address any vulnerabilities next summer.
The Gov also have an option to buy them and hook them up to gas when the 2 year lease expires.
They haven't committed further because the National energy market operator has also been tasked with responding to the after affects of closing down aging coal fired generators and managing that transition.
