    The simplest way to put it is a crop has what is known as potential yield. This pretty much means that if the crop has the prefect conditions like water, nutrients, temp, diease free etc the maximum yield that can be obtained.

    On average in Australia farmers are producing just over half of this potential yield.

    The difference between actual yield and potential yield is known as yield gap. This is where we can improve our wheat yields by closing the gap. So for example if the potential yield for my area(rainfall, soil type etc) is 4t/ha and my actual yield is 2t/ha there is room to theoretically improve my wheat yield by 100%. Now it is impossible to close this yield gap completely however getting closer to 80% potential yield is possible.
