They now have changed from FTTP to FTTN to FTTC, both last options use the old obsolete worn out, inadequate, copper network on the last leg, on instruction of the government (the owners of the NBN).
Not really Telstra's problem, because it is not their network.
However there is nothing that stops Telstra firing up their 5G network in all earnest in full competition with the NBN after completion of the NBN network.
Telstra made the statement that the back bone of the 5G network is the fibre network to their towers.
However, if NBN can't compete with their fixed network (depending on the last few meters of ill maintained corroding copper network) in the speed and flexibility of 5G, it will be pretty obvious which way people will move.
So yes the NBN is the backbone of the 5G network. But NBN in that case can only charge for the service to the 5G towers and not for the distribution system to the individual premises.
If they charge too much for that service, there is always the ACCC (ha,ha,ha, bloody ha).
However in the total scheme of things, in that case, with the existing infrastructure it shouldn't be too expensive for Telstra to set up its own fibre backbone network and become completely independent of the NBN.
We will see how things Penn Out.

telstra arnt stupid they know what they are doing.
happy to accept the rental payments for the infrastructure of the old copper fron the govt till 2020.
and in the background working on building and release of 5g to all.
only tls can build this 5 g network.
the other retailers may end up renting from telstra in order to provide a 5g service.
might be case of shrt term pain for long term gain.
