Not sure about that, I could probably ask MasterCard and see what they have to say on it. I work with some of their guys in Waterloo on a regular basis. As you said, you extrapolate those numbers and you get some interesting results. I know that MasterCard are handing their PayPass specifications to EMVCo in 2009 or 2010. EMV currently doesn't charge for the specifications for the standard EMV, therefore I don't know if there will be a licence fee attached to the PayPass specifications. I would also envisage we will see a merging between the PayPass specifications and the ones from Visa (payWave/VisaWave). Not sure how that would impact on potential licensing as well.
